Sevenoaks Historical Society was formed in 1996 from the History Section of The Sevenoaks Society. Although it is still in association with The Sevenoaks Society, it is an independent body registered as a separate charity. It is affiliated with the Kent History Federation and is a member of the Kent Archaeological Society.
The aim of our Society is to promote an interest in history, covering both local and general historical topics. Currently we have around 130 members and typically hold nine meetings a year. Our speakers have educated and entertained us with a lively and impressive variety of talks over the years, ranging from buildings to battlefields, Romans to railways, medieval manners to maps, studies of notable individuals and histories of subjects such as the House of Lords, the English language, gardens, gypsies, domestic lighting and ladies’ underwear. There are plenty more to come.
We have also organised tours to places of historical interest and aim to encourage historical research and publication. The Society has published two books to date: David Killingray,ed, ‘Sevenoaks People and Faith: Two Thousand Years of Religious Belief and Practice’ (Chichester, 2004) and more recently, David Killingray and Elizabeth Purves, eds, ‘Sevenoaks: an Historical Dictionary’ (Andover 2012).
This full-colour, lavishly illustrated book was produced with the support of The Sevenoaks Society. Its 232 pages contain a wealth of information from over 100 contributors covering people, places, organisations and themes.
‘Sevenoaks: an Historical Dictionary’ is available from Sevenoaks Bookshop, price £14.99.
