Did you have Sevenoaks ancestors who were involved in the Great War? If so, you may be able to help us with one of our current projects, which is featured in the August 2013 edition of FamilyTree magazine.
There are 225 names on the Sevenoaks World War I memorial. We are keen to find out more about the men listed and would love to hear from anyone with a connection. We would like to have enough information to publish a book, ideally with photographs and family memories. Some of the men worked on the Knole estate, childhood home of the writer Vita Sackville West, and we would be particularly interested to hear from the families of these men, such as Thomas Pattenden, who was a wicket porter, and Oliver Older, who had been a groom.
We hope to discover the stories of these men and hopefully publish a book as part of the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of war next year. We are also keen to find out more about local conscientious objectors, those who drove ambulances etc, and any local women who worked as nurses.
If you have any information you could share about this, please contact us. You can also follow the progress of this project on twitter @7oaksmemorial.
