Edenbridge Celebrates Bonfire!
The small Kentish town of Edenbridge has celebrated the discovery of the Gunpowder Treason for many years centuries. Generally on the first Saturday in November the town will see the results of many hours of hard and often secretive labour in its annual night of tradition, fun, music and colour. The evening starts at around 6.30pm, when the streets will be closed to traffic and a torch lit procession takes over the town!
At the head of the Procession the “Bishop of Bonfire” will preside over his entourage, closely followed by the Bonfire Society’s effigies. The infamous traitor Guy Fawkes will be accompanied by poor Anne Boleyn of Hever (with her head tucked underneath her arm!). Some 2,000 torches illuminate the proceedings and in the procession there will be elaborate tableaux and Marching Bands.
The torch lit procession along the streets of Edenbridge culminates in a unique firework display. As well as some of the loudest and most spectacular fireworks in the country, you will see one of Britain’s largest free-standing effigies of the man who started it all, “Guy Fawkes” and (as a much newer tradition) you will also see a “Celebrity Guy”, a newsworthy national or international figure. Both effigies stand around 30ft in height and will cunningly self-destruct in a breathtaking spectacular of explosions!
